Men’s League Match 6 results

Before we begin let me say, with great sadness, that one of our family has passed – Dan O’ – June 25th. He was with us through every season of our Men’s League, and he tried his darndest to play in our 2023 season, in spite of his declining health. He and his late wife Joyce gladly stepped up, unsolicited, in past years to mind the golf course for a week, allowing me and Julie the opportunity to take a summer week off around Julie’s birthday on July 13 … He loved to golf – here at MGC and at many other courses with friends – he will be sorely missed by many. Tom Squires, his longtime friend and often golf partner, will be playing in Dan’s stead for the remainder of the season. He’s now lost his last contemporary golf buddy – consider asking/calling Tom to play with you when you’re looking for a partner or a fourth… does anyone prefer to play golf alone? Visitation will be Friday, June 30 from 1-3 PM at the Miller Funeral home in Roxbury, followed by a 3PM funeral service and burial at the Roxbury Cemetery. We’ll be in attendance; perhaps you too may consider paying your respects to a fine man and fellow competitor.

Our Near-Pin carryover went back to hole #4 once again and low and behold it was late DanO’s partner Gary Hessberger who snuck his tee shot to 13’3″ to pocket the $30 near pin pot AND last week’s carryover – a $58 win! His birdie on #4 was followed by 5 consecutive pars (31 net 22!) but it didn’t earn him a skin as rejuvenated Mike Lor (28 net 25) covered Gary’s birdie with one of his own. Skins pot was $45 and divided 3 ways for 3 $15 wins: Jamie Wilson birdied #2; Mike Chevy birdied #6; and Ken Steinbuch had the lone bird on #8.

First place was at stake and the defending champs won a competitive match to take over first place. Chris tied or won holes on 3 of 4 holes where he received strokes and went 2-2-1 on the other 5

(Still waiting for Florencio’s score vs Average Barney to post team 6 bye week card)

The almost Giant Killers each received 9 strokes from Mitch/Chevy and John and Yvan played reasonably well (net 33 and 29 respectively) but couldn’t hold back Mitch/Chevy ‘s march up the standings as the 73-27 winners shot a combined net +1
Substitute Lenny’s handicap shrunk a bit too much with a hot practice round but in spite of giving up 9 strokes to last year’s Nick Malaxos Sandbagger of the Year Bill Drew managed to win enough points to contribute to his team’s 57-43 win. Ken/Lenny took the last two holes 15-1 and that seemed to be the difference maker in a match that looked all even after 7 holes.
Mike Lor seems to be back on track shooting a one under par gross 28 net 25 offsetting his A player opponent Justin Callahan’s fine 36 net 28. The player points team sum 28-24 provided the 4 point margin of victory for the Lor family team.
The “new” Giant Killers Kenny/Ron shot really well (net 31 and 26 respectively) but were no match for Tom Squires resurgent net 30 and Gary Hessberger’s season league best 31 net 22 (which should cost him a few handicap strokes next week)
Tony/Lou jumped out to a 32-0 lead in team points after winning the first four holes outright and Lou almost fulfilled my wish for a hole in one (on #7) to memorialize DanO’s passing – but he did sink the tap-in birdie putt…
