Match 14: the gun lap begins

And so the beginning of the end of our 2023 season commences… and with it a few surprises … were they really a surprise? Is it any surprise that the defending champions Jamie and Christopher have risen up from the mat to reclaim first place? Can they hold on for another two matches and repeat as champions? Is it any surprise that Kenny Joseph reinforced his claim as the “Nick Malaxos Sandbagger of the Year” by shooting a +6 35 (net 24) that was only topped by … you guessed it … Christopher Stevens 34 net 22 !!?? And it was only a few years ago that Justin Callahan was lucky enough to shoot twice his age… next week he’ll sport a 7 handicap after shooting a 4 over par 33 net 24 … surprised? Well done all!

Closest to the pin on #4 attracted three entrants… Gary Hessberger made his bid early with an effort that just trickled onto the front of the green – but was easily surpassed by sharpshooter Mike Lor’s 23′ effort… but it was Mike Chevy who took the prize with his 14’3″ tee shot – and he grabbed a skin with a par on the previous hole number 3… don’t feel bad for Mike (or his brother Justin Lor) as they grabbed the other two skins.

Match 16, in two weeks, will conclude our season… That will be on September 6. I’d like to hold our banquet on September 13 – give me the week to consolidate the results, gather steaks and sides and beer for the celebration, etc. Trying to enter scores, tally results, cook the banquet … well it’s a bit much even for me. So… on September 17 I’d like to ask you to play a round and then we’ll award the low gross and low net teams (that are “out of the money” e.g. 1st to 3rd place in league) a free dinner ($60 for the team). I’ll have to look at the budget but I think $80 closest to the pin on #8 with EVERYBODY eligible would be cool and then your $5 skin players will be all for skins… ok? If you want to bring a guest you HAVE to let me know NOW so that I can order extra steaks (oh and I’ll make fish, grilled veggies, beans for you non meat eaters) – again, let me know)

The defending champs turn it on and find themselves in first place with two weeks to go… Next week they face off against last week’s first place team, Mitch/Mike Chevy for another first place showdown. Dustin/Casey played fine near net par golf but just couldn’t keep up with Christopher Stevens match best gross 34 net 22… They’ll play Ken Steinbuch / James Litaker next week to see who stays in the money.
Those pesky ghosts win another match… looking forward to some subs to play for the ghosts over the next two weeks… It’s more fun playing in a foresome…
Yvan/John Zummo play themselves out of their 18 handicaps both shooting 45 net 27 to win a close match in spite of Justin’s fine 33 net 24 and Zach’s well played near net par 38 net 31.
Ken / James were up 30-26 in team points when they both parred the 8th hole for an 8-0 result putting the match away. Mitch / Mike Chevy fall into 2nd place (but next week play defending champs Jamie/Christopher) and Ken/James will have a shot at 3rd place $$$ next week when they face Dustin/Casey with only two matches left in the season
Andrew/Florencio played steady golf and won a close match – Winning the first three holes but almost gave it away losing 2 of the last 3 holes…
Skip hung in there going net stroke for stroke with Mike Lor, but Bill Drew had one of those days that earned him the “Nick Malaxos Sandbagger of the Year” award that will surely keep his handicap up for at least another week… Which Bill Drew will play next week?
In a battle of teams often termed “the Giant Killers” Kenny Joseph firmly established himself as a candidate for “Nick Malaxos Sandbagger of the Year” with a round (35 net 24) that had Tony Tanner shaking his head asking himself “Why am I giving this guy strokes?”

    1. Thanks for the noodge, Larry – it’s posted now. Looking forward to seeing you again soon. Stop by if you’re on your feet; elevator works if you’re not up to climbing 20 stairs.
