8 months… Welcome BACK!

I just checked out our blog posts and realized… it’s been 8 months since our league banquet…

So here we go… Week 1 of the 2023 season. Fourteen teams again – most playing for FUN, a handful playing for bragging rights. Boy, did it feel good to look out the elevated glass garage doors of the new clubhouse and see all of you guys out playing golf.

It was a bit chaotic… I had to rebuild the league software database and get you all into the newly built Wednesday 2023 Mens League… Hope you all didn’t mind the method used to assign team number… but now that we know who is on what team we can publish the master schedule and contact lists so please do communicate with each other (and more importantly find your own substitutes!)

OK on to week 1 !!

Casey and Dustin showed up first and put your tee markers into fresh sod (because who wants to tee off from a divot?) Hence they’re now Team 1 … Shortly thereafter let’s all welcome back original leaguer John Franckowiak who teamed up with Marcel to form team 2. Average Barney played for Marcel this week.

Casey / Dustin cleaned up although Dustin (the only game I play is Golf) Hall left a skin on the table with the only birdie on #6

Only a couple of messy par 4 holes kept John Z / Yvan from beating Justin / Zac …

A lot closer than it looks at first glance: John / Yvan won 4 of 9 holes …

The Ken vs Kenny matchup once again had David surprisingly defeating Goliath as Kenny Joseph combined a steady 42 net 32 with a first ever closest to the pin win. James Litaker kept the match close by soundly defeating Ron Kutkiewicz but Kenny / Ron took the win 58-42 this time.

editors note: If you want to start play on the 4th tee you need to fill your scorecard starting on #4

This season’s low handicap team of Mitch Hull / Mike Chairvolotti took on last year’s giant killers – Tony Tanner / Lou Capello. Lou wasn’t able to replicate his handicap killing early season practice round so the giant killers never exploited the combined 17 handicap strokes they received.

Tied after 4 holes then wooosh

Super Sub young Ryan Sanford substituted for new leaguer / member Chris Smith. His teammate and first time leaguer / long time member John Madeo edged out his opponent Florencio Navarro 14-12 and Ryan pulled his weight defeating first time leaguer and soon to be James Beard award winning chef Andrew North.

Andrew just couldn’t find his groove so perhaps next week he’ll grab another handicap stroke or two – remember handicaps are calculated from the best 3 of your last 5 scores …

The defending champs (Jamie / Christopher) took on Average Arnie / Gary Hessberger. Get well soon Dan O’ !!! Sorry I couldn’t procure a substitute for you – I’ll print a substitute list and email it to you all as soon as possible because I won’t … I refuse … to find your substitutes for you this season –

Gary’s 5 double bogies or more and 4 bogies sunk his round – the groundskeeper needs to keep feeding / watering / rolling / and maybe aereating and resodding these greens …

And the final match of the day pitted Mike Lor vs Average Arnie and Bill Drew facing Average Barney … Hope those pollen counts drop soon Skip … hope you feel better! Can you golf with an N95 mask and a pair of goggles? (yikes just kidding) … Jonathan Crane appears to be AWOL … hope everything is OK… Mike tried calling/texting … I tried an email… so far nothing. Hope to see you soon Jonathan!

not exactly a stellar round by either player… Mike probably won’t pick up a stroke as his round won’t ever be in his best 3 of any 5. Defending Nick Malaxos Sandbagger of the Year Bill Drew didn’t do anything to hurt his handicap, either so look out – next week he’ll probably shoot a 35 and hit a hole in one on #8

Week 1 skins/near pin: 13 players – $65 pot $26 near pin, $39 skins

Near Pin – Kenny Joseph 80.3 inches! Next week we play #7

Skins: both on the par 4’s Christopher Stevens parred #1, Mike Chevy birdied #9
