Match 10 – hot and underway

Maybe a Wednesday after work league should be played on… Wednesday after work?

Well as a league we’ve decided that if you can’t play at our “par time” of 4:30PM on Wednesday you can reach out to your opponents and – try – to arrange a mutually agreeable time… well that theory works under the assumption that four people can effectively communicate clearly their desires and intentions with each other in a timely manner… well today clearly demonstrated our collective inability to do just that… in a few select cases things worked according to plan but in others… not so much.

So… to wrap this up… if you don’t answer your phone, or if you haven’t set up your voice mail box, or if you never listen to your messages, or if you don’t reply to texts in a timely manner, or if you live and/or work in an area without cell coverage (and have no other means of timely communication) … well then you really should consider abandoning the concept of playing at any other time except Wednesday at 4:30PM. Maybe make use of our extensive sub list ( minus Tim Maxim who nobody told that the match he was subbing into was changed to another day… he might not want to sub anymore after that show of disrespect )

Now, if for some reason you don’t play on Wednesday at approximately 4:30PM I’ll just fill out your scorecards for you… if you manage to arrange your match (i.e. all four players getting together at MGC and playing their 9 hole match together) then I’ll enter your scorecard as presented to me…. oh and don’t expect me to maintain the course tees and holes at the same yardage while I wait for folks to play their matches… nope… I change pins and tees when I need to and won’t even attempt to maintain the “level playing field” that I did in the past because I’ll have no idea when (or if) you’ll play your matches…

It wasn’t even as catastrophically hot as the news media wanted us to believe… I even stayed with my standard blue one-sy to play my match (granted I probably smelled like a well aged urn of kimchee) and made it through my round none the worse for wear. Others played earlier or may play later? This week’s featured match (Chris/Jamie vs Lenny/Derek) (1st vs 2nd) was put off until next Tuesday as Chris tweaked his shoulder… sure hope they don’t end up having to play through a thunderstorm as Tuesday midnight when the clock strikes 12 that’s IT for match 10 scorecards…

We had 10 players in near pin / skins Wednesday … and the skins report is the only one I can run until the rest of the scores come in… Harry Saslow stuck the green first thing in the morning with a 9’11” effort that held up throughout the day and was good for $20… Dan O’ continues to tee off like fictional archer William Tell and managed not one, but two skins and $20 with the only pars on holes 3 and 5 … Bill Drew continues drawing votes for “Nick Malaxos Sandbagger of the Year” honors by birdying #6 for the last $10 in the pot despite posting a handicap boosting round.

Russ got another partner, and he didn’t break his arm or spontaneously combust even after Russ shouted “Beetlejuice” three times… Florencio Navarro, who has been golfing at MGC for more than 20 years brings a Peruvian Latin flair and a full cooler of Modelo beer to today’s match… much to Yvan and maybe John Zummo’s detriment… actually a few too many cervezas cost Florencio big on his 9th hole… He’s looking forward to meeting all of you – you might recognize him as he’s been around for a long time but now that he’s moved up here he’ll be golfing with us a lot more often.

Florencio / Russel won by the narrowest of margins in a late day match against John / Yvan… I think it was the Modelos that Florencio kept opening that finally kicked in over the last three holes that made the difference. John had an exceptional match (other than the three toughest holes)… he played the other 6 at +10 gross… +7 net … bogie golf! Both John and Yvan could prove to be VERY dangerous opponents over the last half of the season…
In a match played Saturday morning, Zac and fresh off the plane Justin stood in 4th place and were playing Mitch / Larry who stood in 3rd… but not anymore. Just as in past seasons, Zac / Justin just seem to have the Hull’s number as untimely miscues by the Hulls gave team 2 a convincing victory in both individual matches as well as team match and medal play.
Holes 3,4,7,9 proved to be Skip and Bill’s undoing as they dropped each of those holes 8-0 to the ever steady Ken Steinbuch and the resurgent (38 net 26) James Litaker who won’t be sporting a 12 handicap next week…
The “Giant Killers” looked good through 3 holes, started slipping on holes 4,5,6, and finally ran out of gas on the final three holes while Dustin shot an OK match and won by 5 net strokes and Casey busted the foursome with a 40 net 26 to counter Lou’s pretty darn good 48 net 30.
All tied up after 5 holes… Jamie/Chris never let up on the gas pedal and pulled away outscoring Lenny / Derek 23-9 over the final 4 holes and so hold onto first place for yet another week…
Wow what a close match! Ron & Kenny gave Mike / Jonathan all they could handle and actually won the net strokes team total by a single stroke… The final three holes shaped the outcome as Mike / Jonathan outscored Ron / Kenny 20-4 which provided most of the cushion in their 18 point win
A match that I can only describe as “a real close blowout” Brian / Harry beat Dan O’/ Gary mostly on the strength of their last 4 holes when they outscored the opponents 29-3. Brian / Harry won 6, lost 2, and tied 1 hole in what was pretty much a straight up match… always seeming to win a hole by a stroke here or there… this match was a lot closer than the final score indicated…
