Men’s Match 4 results

Well we managed to sandwich a beautiful Wednesday in between the 1.5″ of rain Tuesday and who knows what tomorrow… of course the Tuesday afternoon showers kept me from my appointed rounds on BIG RED aka THE ORANGE CRUSH aka THE JAKE F10 aka the rough mower and so the need to play from the short grass was acute… lost balls abounded ( I had two on #3 myself… resulting in a lovely ten spot on my scorecard… ouch ) … I also want to comment on slow play… In these conditions it’s gonna happen – and I also have to let you know that we let a fivesome and a foursome out during / just before league – I’m truly sorry as we just can’t let nine greens fees escape our clutches… revenues are that tight. So for a fact I know that we got backed up and I know that customers on the course during league play played a big part of that so between that and current conditions I have to ask you to have as much patience as you might have to demonstrate when playing on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park on a Sunday afternoon… Sorry for the congestion, fellas.

Another big week of substitutes / rescheduled matches… Cody Rieder filled in, playing with Mike Lor… since he had a full season of league play here at MGC I was able to import him and his scores and give him an accurate handicap right from the get-go. Similarly Lenny Millen, whose match against Yvon / John Zummo will be played early next week (Yvon was in NYC; John Zummo tested Covid Positive (get well (read negative) soon, John!) so Lenny came to sub in… Now, since Lenny is a league regular he can only play once a week so like when Kenny Joseph substituted for his grandson Sam in week 1 ( and played under the alias of PGA player Kenny Perry) I assigned Lenny the name of former PGA standout Lanny Wadkins. Lanny has Lenny’s scores and consequently the same handicap and when Bill Drew called to say Team 9 was calling in absent, I had Lanny play for Skip, and Ghost Average Barney play for Bill against the Hulls… so that’s how that works. If Bill hadn’t called when he did Lenny (Lanny) would have substituted for my partner, Sam Joseph, who ended up with Ghost Average Barney playing for him, too. (BTW Sam has quit due to work obligations so if you know of anybody who wants to jump in… let me know… better still if you know of two players…)

Thirteen of you joined near pin / skins … and not a ball found its way onto the 2nd green so that means we’ve got our first carryover of the season – $26 added onto next weeks pot… if you missed this week’s game then pay $7 (instead of $5) to get that extra loot… we’ll play on hole #3 next week. Skins pot was $39 this week – divided 4 ways that’s $9.75 to Justin (par #1), Mitch (birdie #5), and $19.50 more to Mike Lor (birdie #6, par #9)

OK… Onto the Matches!!!

First Place Jamie / Chris continue their “Sprint to the Title” (though the season is more of a marathon) as Jamie took FULL advantage of Gary’s really bad week winning EIGHT of NINE holes (only a dreaded “other” on #2 averted a sweep). Partner Christopher Stevens edged match 3 closest to the hole winner Dan O’ by a single net stroke and took FULL advantage of the 4 strokes he received winning one and tying the other 3 holes where he received a stroke. Gary leaves a tough Match 4 picking up one more stroke for next week’s match against Dustin / Casey
2nd place Justin / Zach are 67 points behind the leaders and managed a close win versus Tony / Lou. Justin played his now usual steady game – 2 pars, 4 bogies, 3 double bogies to take the lion’s share of points from Tony. Lou (sandbagger of the year candidate, again?) also took full advantage of his handicap strokes losing only one of seven holes where he received a stroke to take full advantage of Zach’s off day.
3rd Place Dustin / Casey lost to Russel / Average Barney in a match that was all even after 5 holes, but after a decisive 7-1 win on hole 6 the defending champs dropped both holes 7 and hole 8 8-0 and those were the decisive points
A close match through 5 holes; the team points swung on the 8-0 win 4th place Mike / Cody pitched on #6… the remainder of the margin came about due to both Mike and Cody winning their Net Score matches and consequently shutting out Tim / Ken 28-0 in the Match AND Medal points awarded
Mitch / Larry Hull solidified their hold on Fifth place with a solid 75-25 win over substitutes Lanny (e.g. Lenny) Wadkins / Average Barney. The Hulls went 5-2-2 in holes and took all 28 Match / Medal points.
One of the closest matches of the season – Brian / Harry EDGED Ron / Kenny 52-48. After 6 holes Brian / Harry were up 32-16 in team points but Ron / Kenny fought back strong 18-6 on holes 7,8,9 but fell by 4

Word is that Lenny / Derek will play Ivan / John Zummo before Match 5 next Wednesday. I’ll update the reports once their card match 4 scorecard is in.

    1. if memory serves… was that “should” or “had to” … the ramifications are to standings and handicap – in seasons past the real problem was skins / near pin which we fixed by confining that game to Wednesday only … if they fail to play before Match 5 be assured that there will be a lot of zeroes across the board so they better hope for fair weather.
